Personality: When first meeting Iwai one will find him rather hard to approach. He's no nonsense and is even described as being a surly manager by the game. It seems that he's not likely to have a lot of friends or people close to him in his life since he doesn't let people get close to him easily. There are few that he trusts and even those that he does he can still be rather gruff with. One would think him to have unfriendly ties just by looking at him.
In truth he's a man with a dark past who is just trying to find a normal life now. He's been through a lot but he has a kid to support these days. It's in getting to know this part of his life that one sees that he has a warmth to him that he tries to keep hidden away. Maybe to maintain his reputation or maybe because he's not used to that side of him being seen. Whatever the case is, he genuinely seems to care about those that he becomes close to and if he adopts you as family then you are tied to him in ways that are unspoken.
For those he cares about he's very protective. If someone he cares about is in trouble then he will do anything to make sure they are safe again. This we see when Kaoru is kidnapped and Iwai shows he's willing to return to crime if it means he can get him back safe and sound. He will sacrifice himself, heart or body or soul, to ensure the happiness and safety of those he treasures the most. That kind of loyalty is something to be treasured and maintained since it's not clear what he will do if you break that trust.
A criminal past is hard to get past though. Sometimes it still catches up to him and it makes him seem suspicious of things even if he's completely innocent about things he's doing. It also means he has a general mistrust for law types and isn't likely to let his guard down easily around anyone who seems to be a cop. As far as he's concerned, until they prove otherwise they're just irritations trying to get him in trouble for just trying to live a normal life and will always condemn him even if they're unaware of his past.
Now, this criminal past also means that he has a great admiration of anyone who has a lot of courage about things. Stand up for something, even stand up to him, and he's sure to end up liking that. Having that kind of guts means you're willing to do insane things at great risks. Sure that can mean stupidity but it's not the stupidity he's looking at or even wanting to be a part of. No, it's that amount of heart you're revealing by the actions and words you use. Courage is an amazing and impressive thing to him and fantastic way to get on his good side for sure.
All of this is what one can get when they get to know him. However, you have to get to see the man beneath all that gruff. The man who constantly has a lollipop in his mouth and a son he adores and treasures more than anything in the universe. This is something we see through the eyes of the Protagonist who takes us through the journey of Iwai's life and how he's not let his past control him. Instead he's become a man who can be an actual father to this boy he took in years ago when his mother abandoned him.
And oh if you do anything to his son... Iwai is willing to go up against the terrifying yakuza, who he used to be a part of, to save him. However, he also was once afraid to reveal that past to his son or even to call him his son. That kind of darkness is something most wouldn't want to be part of. With the Protag's help he was able to reveal that to Kaoru and now they are a family that is stronger than ever. The family of the gecko, a symbol that Iwai treasures so much he has it tattooed to his skin. For the gecko means family and family is the most important thing in this world. It doesn't matter if you're blood related or not. All that matters is that it's a family you've created and love.
In the end, gruff though he is, he's a very caring man with a good heart. Not that he'll let anyone see that so easily. Hey, he's got a reputation to maintain you know.
